I believe that all fish are alive - not all that inhabits the sea is a fish - I am unsure but I think I heard from Syed Zahid Hussain Shah Saib once that only fish is permissible - other things may be haraam / makroo depending on the individual creature. for example there is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars with ref to prawns - some consider them halal whilst others choose to define prawns as not fish and therefore markroo.
Allah knows best.

Sar daad na daad dast dar dast-e-yazeed
haqqa ke bina la illah ast hussain!

All Fishes are halal Why? beacuse by the time you would pull them out put a knife on the neck they would have been left the earth!
Depeding onthe kind of fish, it is halal.
There is this incident of Hazoor Paak
Once A Sahbi
brought fish, they tried cooking it but it wouldnt cook, so Sahibi
left it for few days to cook but it still woudnt cook, So the Sahbi
took it to Hazoor Paak
an explained the situwation so Hazoor Paak
lets ask the fish, so the fish replied " i was in my lake swiming until i heard this neice sweet voice reciting the durood paak (the fish read it out) and said this has gone into my heart and i wont cook coz it is in my heart" it was later known the reciter was Hazoor Paak

may the Prophet's graceful eyes give me courage!

Creature from water, only fresh fish from sea or river is Halal for Hanafi. But the same Halal fish became Haram if it is from cultivated farms where if the fish feed is made of pork bone meals or non-zabiha beef bone meal. This is true for cultivated Salmon, Catfish because there are many fish cultivated forms in USA and Europe. So before buying fish, please buy only fresh fish not cultivated fish.
Regarding fish at restuarants or fast food restuarants, do not order fried fish because who knows what is in coating used for fried fish, they can add Haram whey, Haram color and Haram flavor including beer flavor made with real beer. Even if you do not eat beer batter fish, your Halal fish is contaminated with beer batter fish because they use the same frying oil for all fish including beer batter fish, so your Halal fish became Haram. Red Lobster restaurants in USA/Canada uses same frying oil for beer batter fish and non beer batter fish. Only Broiled or Grilled fish with 100% butter should be order. Stay away from any sauces for broiled or grilled fish.
