On Sunday I visited Blackburn, I didn't fall off the edge of the Earth as we left Yorkshire :o nor spontaneously combust; infact felt like I had been there before, perhaps in a dream or a past life, not that i believe re-incarnation, though if it is true can I please not come back as a Duck, because I can't swim...does anybody remember the days I actually used to be funny? lal

I went to Blackburn for the annual Urs of the Aslami's and to help in blocking the traffic, I stayed true to my resolve and wore plain-clothes with a topi and attar; I just don't feel comfortable in pyjamas and my decision not to carry an umbrella or wear a rain coat was vindicated despite being in Lancashire where they get 6 months of rain the winter and then 6 monts of crap weather in the summer; no matter how bad it gets in Yorkshire you can rest assured that it's always worse in Manchester and around there; it's to do with the Pennines and how it affects the weather system, most of the rain gets dumped on their side of the Pennines, so on behalf of Yoprkshire - thank you (and we beat you in the Roses as well).

Mudassar I was paranoid that I was seeing you everywhere, were you on Oak Street at around 12? lal

Anyway is anybody from Blackburn? I like knowing about muslim communities up and down the country. I took a walk and drive around the communities there and found it quite serene, like everybody was getting on like a house on fire; is this true? There were so many mosques within a stones throw away from each other, so that indicates something wasn't quite right, there were hardly any g-spots though, just looked like some ruffians who still listen to 2pac, one or two looked like Maxi Priest fans so that saves some kudos.

What are property prices like? And what do the locals think of this annual traffic blocking parade, just seemed to be everyone stood on their doorsteps whilst others took over their town, I think there's too many non-sunnis there and what's with 'Kanjra International Foods?' and 'Cutchi Hall?' lol naugty words.

No bro the only march i ever attended was the one against salman rushdie all them yrs ago! I dont see the point of blocking traffic - if u want to celebrate rasool a.s birth then save the money and give it to a local school, get the hospital a new scanner - the world will remember how large hearted are muslims.

I remember as a child one of my old man's friends who was a mureed of the said pir called me to their house as the pir saab was coming - boy was i in for a surprise when the lights went off!

Know the ledge...

Congratulations you got your visa to visit the Red Rose county, I hope my fellow lancastrians didnt abuse you too much !!! I guess you never told 'em you were a yorkshire lad (kaark spit - throat feels clearer now.) lolo ...

Any way or in yorks lingo "Any road" hope you enjoyed ur stay, ur correct we have approx 50 mosques in roughly less than 2.5 sq miles... lets see we have

Indian Gujji sunnis
Pakistaani sunnis
Indian Deos (few big arab funded copper clad domes on them !! )
Pakistaani ahle hadith (2 of)
India deo from Surat
Indian deo from Bharuch
you got your Kutchi mosque
a Kokni one for good measure
The Dawate Islami have one main one and you usually find them in all the sunni mosques at maghrib
as you call them the Aslami (RA) crew have a regular mosque/Khaanqah
The Indian Chisti silsila have their khaanqah.
The Shia have two places.
There are numerous madressas usually in places where Planning permission is impossible to get !!

So a typical town really.....

We have the Rabi ul Avval joloos's two different mosques organise them, but we go to both grub is brill and loadsa naata from the Karachi crew (owais, yusuf et al)
After been rained out for a few years the Aslami bros moved their annual jooloos to June, narrowley missed a downpour this year though.

We are famed for cock'in up the Rushdie affair about 25 years ago ... way toooo much jazbaat man... we made that book a best seller..and 99.99% of us don't know what was actually written in it..

oh by the way every visiting shaykh from indo pak has a base here too, Thursday Friday evenings you can catch a mehfil of milad or zikr or even qawwali in a place somewhere in Blackburn, Just to be bloody awkward the Jumma times are synchronised to the same time, so no one on shifts has a choice of mosque.

Also timetables .... big mess here... about 15 different versions for the same longitude and latitude.... I think we were the first town to establish Radio Ramzan, quiet popular and lots of keen competion to obtain the license every year... oh and btw we have Ummah TV... nuf said.

The only other thing we are famous for is the number of Accident claim shops and extreme car insurance prices... but I beleive Bradford is the only place worse than Blackburn for this.

Salams,

Hey don’t be knocking my beloved Blackburn Town!!! The best town in the world!!! I was born there,LolZzzz!!! Blackburn used to be a sound town, really nice unfortunately now its gone down hill (Sad Face)

The part you went to is Audley Range (most likely you went pass me Mum’s House!!!) and you definitely went pass my old junior school (it’s the one next to the Aslami Naqshbandi Mujadidi Masjid on Pringle Street) when I used to go to that school (Audley Juniors and Infants C of E school) it was 20% ethnic and today I think its 2% white, LolZ!!! Yes and on Sunday I too was in Blackburn and I vividly heard the chants of ALLAH HOO ALLAH HOO ALLAH HOO repeatedly being chanted through the tannoy/pr system (I was sleeping at me Mums and I hear my Mum telling me Nephew to go and join the Juloos)

Did you start at oak street? That part of Blackburn is Whalley Range (very vibrant) qulu Asians!!! You go past Randal St Mosque? That was our local masjid in the 80’s – the only Barelvi Masjid in town back then (I think)

You went pass the chester street mosque (Audley side of the town)? Yes, You did - its called Masjid e Ghausia, That’s our local Masjid. The Muaazin of that Masjid returned to ALLAH SWT last week! It’s a fine Mosque we go there every big nights and do our Eid prayers there – too many najdi’s in Liverpool everything is bidah for them!!! (We start our Ramazan with Blackburn Crew) I’ll be there at the weekend again celebrating Miraj Un Nabi S.A.W – The biggest night in the history of the Islamic calendar!!! ….. cant believe I’ll be in Blackburn for the third weekend running!!! Maan, Blackburn used to be ace! I think Dawateislami Bhaijaans have made a base at this masjid they were there at the weekend and the weekend before last with their sleeping bags. Ahhh, yes and the kibristaani (cemetery) thingy they (DI ) do every year on big nights is one of the highlights to read/look forward too in the local newspaper the next day, LolZ.

Sultans Palace – best curry house in town (probably in the uk) i was there three days on the trot couple of weeks ago – the guy who runs that place, he’s a really good guy – a family man. (proper nice home made) Curry and two roti’s plus salad £3.50 – this guy should open a chain of takeaways, in the UK - simply fantastic!

Khanjra!!!LolZ!!! their the biggest catering suppliers to the asian takeaways and restaurants in the North of England – they are big!

Hey you stop disrespecting the Cutchi Hall (Lol) – Me Da helped build that hall! Once it was done the ungrateful cutchi people (my kaum) showed their true colours!!! If only they had made it in to a Masjid!!!! But still… Me Dad’s a legend in Blackburn - everyone knew him. When ever I go there and bump in to people (even 20 years after) me and my Brothers are known as Aziz’ Sons!

and that Masjid next to the panti-hall LolZ thats where I learnt the basics of Alif Be Te...... (God) memories, I wish i was a kid again.... i still am i think..........

Kutchi means underpants in Punjabi, LolZ – enough said me thinks!!!!LolZ

Would I go back to Blackburn – don’t think so – but Insha’ALLAH I would love to have Blackburn as my final residing place in this world. Majority of my Family is buried there along with Brother–Like Best Friend, Aftab. Afi’s a legend too, proper guy – everyone knew Afi even the BNP lot!!! He was good friends with the main BNP hooligan in Blackburn – a proper nutter!

No disprespect to Blackburn people (I grew up there) If your thinking of moving there – think long and hard. Don’t go off by what you see! .....then again ive been called a cocunut.... but let me asure you I know my roots very well!

@ MR - wow, yeah i remember that march! we took the whole day off school that day - was it 1988? (MR) I knew you were from Blackburn!:)!

Freakin Chicken Farmers have ruined my Lovely Rovers - The only team in history of Premiership Football to be crowned champions of England and to be relegated twice :(

Aye bro badman - we did take days of school - the first and probably only time the whole community got united - people were well vexed!

@ Peri Peri - ur right there are plenty of mosques and madrassah's and most without planning permission. the one i go to doesnt have it either and i remember one yr when some people didnt vote for the councillor it almost got shut down!

the reason we have so many is simply because its labour and to curry favour with all the different sects, sub sects, maslaks, sub maslaks, the different biradris i.e kutchi, surati, baruchi, gujjar, marassi's - they all have their own mosques. Hell we even have our own tv channel - the less said about the owners background - the better!

assalamu alaykum!
An interesting round up of Blackburn! i've never been there but used to have a good friend from there although it might be worth
going for a day just to see how the Northerners live...!!

I've never really lived in an area with a large Muslim/ethnic population before except for my couple of years in Manchester as a doctoral student and it'd be an experience!!

Aww Bless a Blackburn get together, reminiscence of old memories.

The furthermost north I've been is Blackburn, and there is no place like home like Pringle Street the Aslami Naqshbandi Mujadidi Masjid. Great memories, great people and a great circle to engage in the Zikhr of Allah swt.

Bless you Blackburn people for allowing us to stop your traffic, close your roads so you may watch the annual procession fill your streets with colour.

Lasrt saturday I went to BB after so many years. I live in London. Walking on the street obviously on the hill, I saw a traffic warden and before I give him dirty look like we do in London, He looked at me with a smile and said Assalamu Alaykum...and I had to smile back at him and replied with wa alaykum Assalam.

Salaam,

I had the pleasure of visiting Blackburn once in 2005 to buy a car with a mate. He got conned by two bearded blokes.

I love visiting areas where there are loads of Apnay. The different shops, masjids, characters, munch etc. I remember doing some jobs in Luton some years back and whilst strolling along Dunstable road, and seeing all these Pakistanis, I thought to myself, how can Bradford have anymore Pakistanis than this? At the time it seemed physically IMPOSSIBLE for any place on earth to have more Pakistanis than this. I'd have to visit Bradford to find out what all the fuss is about. So I did visit Bradford, funnily enough to buy another car from a guy on Carlisle Road. This time for myself. I too ended up getting conned, worse than my friend did!

The Blackburn march seems nice and simple, judging by the video. The guys seem fairly civilised for Northerners. I always have this idea of Northern apnay being capable of turning these affairs from a peaceful procession into a junglee juloos, all jumping up and down and stuff.

bro never buy a car from pakistani's! thats a rule. My mate who is a dealer swears by it. Infact a few weeks ago he rang the auction house over a car and first question was was the owner asian! I fell for it too a few weeks ago in Oldham!

although that wasnt the intention (to make you feel young) - inadvertently we have pleased a member of the female population and that is to be commended! You cure travel sickness by sitting on a piece of newspaper - dont ask why but was told by an irish friend of mine! :D

By the way i was 13! But i still remember it as emotions were very high - i think it was muzammil shah who was the imam at Randal Mosque the main pakistani sunni mosque and he delivered a fiery speech that day. i only know his name because i seen him on dm digital and i thought i know him from somewhere!

Salams,

Our age don't really matter but since MR mentions 13 then I'll add five years to that - yes we are still 18 at heart!lolZ! Double double!

The name khanjra (lolZ) probably suits their personality... lolZ - that's why they're probably named Khanjra, LolZ! Maan the Gujis have some funny names I knew a family and their name was 'Chaddat' LolZ! One of my pakistani friends used to take the mickey out of us 'Kutchi's (cos the name sounds you know what, lolZ) ...... Hehehe, he ended up marrying a Kutchi girl, LolZ! So I think I better stop it with mickey taking I might end up with a khanjar(I), lolZ.Posted Image

MR - there was some guy if you remember (from whally range) who spreaded rumours that day that he had left something in whsmiths I think he went by the name 'junglee'. LolZ ...... we had some characters in Blackburn even back then, lolZ...... Then there was a guy called 'Rocky' what ever has happened to him. I think he named himself 'rocky' after watching the boxing movie, Rocky starring sly Stallone! LolZ!

On a serious note - Blackburn was the first town/city in the uk to be given permission by the council to let our dead be buried without the coffin, AlHamdulilah.

aye recall the whsmith rumour! i was a bit young to remember rocky but in my later years his brother became a good friend of mine - and one of rocky's accomplices is a very close friend of mine these guys definately run things in blackburn for a long time! Alas economic realities take over and rocky now runs a restaurent in aberdeen i think! Mind you even after all these years he has legendary status - and the man still looks like a tough cookie!

Salaam, great replies.

First of all though I would ask why this thread has not been community highlighted by one of the moderators? This is most viewed and commented thread of this week so far and we'll work under the rebuttal presumption that this task should have been taken care of by TMS seeing as she's the only moderator who has commented in this thread. So why has she not? Surely she as a capable moderator should have recognised the worth of this thread as being valuable enough to be given an upgrade into the community highlights and thus a more publicised platform. It seems there's something not quite working smoothly with the mod team and as a self-elected Union leader of the standard user-base of Yanabi.com I would like to bring this to the fore and attention of the inner-sanctum of Yanabi.com to maybe send the mods - especially tms - on a training course where their senses can be sharpened, social skills can be developed and the fat can be trimmed.

Moving on, Joe Dacky lal this 'junglee' notion is an out-dated vestige of Southeners from years ago, these days we're a progressive and diversly thinking diaspora up here; and I too like ju enjoy venturing out into other muslim communities to have a look around, esecially the masjids, shops, food places and the local myths and legends lal who sells what to who and where

Nice round up from the locals - thank you

I might start venturing out more and doing a summary of the places I visit.

Badman I actually am in that video lal you can see me clearly.

Was that you Mr KTL? I thought so.

I second bro KTL that this thread should highlighted in the community section. Some great in-depth analysis of the local community by the local lads.

BTW, it was a great procession, very peaceful, would like to attend it next year if bro MR invites us. :D
