To what extent do you make sure your meat is halal?
In saudi i buy my chickens lives and then get the gey next door to slaughter them.
In the UK i rarely ate meat as i was wary and suspicious of the butchers
n the UK how do you make sure or dont you give a damn and buy it from the bearded chacha and dont question it?

Don't really have much choice do we bro? I just trust the local haji meat shop and the rest is for GOD to judge. And fish, that's pure halal anyway.

That's so true, Try your best to find about the shop and where they get the meat from.
Anyway, go to your local shop and speak to the owner and ask him, Is this meat HALAL?. That's all you can do.
Also, go speak to HMC and find out how they monitor these shops and what's their criteria! If you find it acceptable then buy from HMC approved shops.
Its not that difficult bro.

Halal Meat is a sympton of a much wider problem. What is to say that meat in Pakistan is halal or any other muslim country? Where you involve business processes the nature of the beast is to cut corners.
Even in the UK to make a profit is foremost. Certificates of "halaalness" are more to stop any probing questions. And to be honest do we really want to probe? Because then maybe with the plethora of E numbers much of our asda shopping may not be halal? The recent revelations about Pepsi prove the same point - how far can you trust big multi-national corporations to put the health of their customers before profits?
As you say yourself dr saab the best way would be to buy live chickens and sacrifice them yourselves. But we live in a queasy world - and this type of system in the UK would have neighbours complaining, health and safety on your case. And by nature we like to outsource anything remotely difficult to the local pir or maulvi. So in essence it would be a great money spinner to add to the khatam sharif's and gyarvi sharifs or anyother sharifs you care to add.
Diet is important hence it maybe a good idea to find a local Kosher place because chances are there meat will be more halal than ours!

Religion should come before diet. It is healthy to have few drinks of alcohol, as researched by the scientists, so should we ignore religion and drink alcohol? if they started saying bacon is good for you, would you also then start eating it?
Regarding the Halal issue, I do not trust these so called shops who label "halal" in their doors/windows. I always try to eat at HMC certified restaurants because then you at least have some guarantee that "checks" have been made and monthly/random monitoring is taking place.
Now ASDA are selling BABAJI halal products in areas where there is muslim majority (i.e. canary wharf) does anyone know if they are halal? Because again I dont want to eat/buy if they say halal but no proof.
Another thing to note: KFC/Nandos are not halal because their suppliers are dodgy. Few years back HFA had labelled these as halal but now they have changed their ruling, which is why i dont trust HFA labelled restaurants either.

OK so that's the answer to the question then.
