Heer Ranjha - Myth Or Reality?

There's no reality in Heer and Ranjha's romance, there famous love story is completely false. Heer was a pious woman, highly respected and a saint of her time. She was the only child of a very rich family, remained unmarried but after her parents' demise, she was accused of having an affair with her servant and then so-called love story was produced out of utter ignorance and animosity. Those accusers were punished and sentenced to jail but rumor started spreading throughout the villages. Story was told by few writer/poets but it became popular all over Punjab when Waris Shah based his book Heer-Waris-Shah on this story. If i remember correctly Hazrat Waris Shah wrote it in the 1200 Hijri and Mai Heer died in 700 Hijri, almost 500 years before him.

Her real name is Izat-Bibi but more commonly known as Mai Heer. Famous love story also claim that both Heer and Ranjha were buried in one grave that is blatant lie. Even today no one will allow this to happen then how come centuries ago both were allowed to be buried in one grave?? People always pay great respect and visit her grave but when visitors from all over the world (most probably after watching Heer Ranjha Movies) started to visit her shrine, Chanda-Party produced a fake tombstone which stated that both lovers are buried in this grave. Since my childhood, I've been visiting her shrine which is located at highest place in the city. Nowadays, entire Heer graveyard is under Shia Mafia's control, covered with black flags except Heer's shrine.

Bilal Zuberi has described Mai Heer as a saint and exposed so-called love story in his book Tareekh-Tazkara-tul-Awulia-e-Jhang. Another writer Prof Sami Ullah Qureshi has also condemned the fake love story, i read it during my college days but i don't remember the name.

People are claiming on this forum that she is shaheed so that means true etc and if its true can a muslim girl and her lover can share a grave .

Sufies /saints/poets they wrote on characters but that not means we start claiming they are real or even shaheed etc.

same in safulmalook too many characters he was discussing and giving examples but almost all never exist in reality.

And what is the source of that claim by some unknown pakistani academic which goes against centuries of the
belief of the local Muslims --commoner and ulema and sufiya alike?

They wrote a lot of wisdom but still that doesnt mean whatever they wrote is good or true .

Bro, the peotry actually doesn't say Kutey to anybody.... it says.

which means....

To talk sense before insincere people is like preparing kheer (pudding) and presenting it to dogs.

So please before putting these poetry down, try to understand its meaning first.

It's an allegory, explaining an abstract concept using tangible examples. No one is being called a dog, but an analogy is being made.

I didn't want to hurt the feeling of Ushaaq but history doesn't come up with Sufi's. I dont think if any Ulma'/Sufi ever wrote about Mai Heer Sahiba except Hazrat Waris Shah, who based his poetry on the famous-folk-tale which has nothing to do with reality. I think most people are familiar with this story only because of movies or Heer Waris Shah.

BTW, it has nothing to do with Amman or Khassan, most of the rumors are being spread by/through Sufia. They focus on Love and mystical significance but they don't care about the source or authenticity of the events, and later generations start relating the events to Sufia.

Murad Bakhsh is a very common name in Jhang and according to locals, he was just a devotee to Mai Heer (an unmarried female saint) but malignity characterized as her lover.

I've attached a picture of her roofless shrine. According to local Muslims, Mai Heer said Rain is Rehmat and don't keep me (my grave) away from Allah's Rehmat (don't build roof (shrine) on my grave). I don't know when were her Shrine built and who built it but it's always roofless.

Yes, it is annoying when people cannot understand the subtleties of poetry, especially the kalam of the great Masters, and begin defaming them.

A less-literal translation than the one the brother has already given would be:

Speaking of sensitive matters to the common, insincere folk
Is, O Muhammad, like casting pearls before swine.

The literal Punjabi expression, 'mitthi kheer paka kay kutyaan aggay dharna' [literally to cook sweet rice pudding and feed it to dogs] is equivalent to the English saying, 'Do not cast pearls before swine' (which
is actually a biblical saying attributed to Isa alayhi salam: O my disciples, do not cast pearls before swine.'

This is in fact a common message of the great Sufis that one should not talk of spiritual secrets in front of the uneducated masses as they will not understand
and could be led astray as a result...

Nothing about offending people and calling them dogs. Little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

I know some people from the Syaal caste don't like what Hazrat Waris Shah sahib wrote because they think it looks badly on their izzat (since Heer was also a Syaal) but they
are a minority. Actually the story had been written by other Punjabi poets before Waris Shah sahib but this wali of Allah's version was so amazingly written it has become by far
the most popular.

Heer and Ranjha's immortal love will be remembered till Qayamat and beyond due to the pen of Hazrat Sayyid Waris Ali Shah sahib!

Yes but still a big number is using this and a big number avoid these type poetry because there is more good to give examples in our boxes.

I know br the meaning what I am saying good sufies gave a lot different expamles as well and they never call naybody low or a kutta etc but we blindly follow whatever we read and listen.

Same as safulamlook kalam a lot available and 80% is not real his kalam and people sell that as safulmalook as well and many locals they wrote the same style and use muhammad as takhuals etc and wrote the poetry and if ones read his real poetry etc you will never ever see anything he wrote and say bad to low or any animal etc.


and I beleive may be its happened in these verses as well , I bought few years back the book and then I found out there are 5/6 versions avaialable and they all different inside.

Very interesting thread.

The point we all seem to be overlooking is the use of a love story between two mortal beings as being symbolic of longing of the Divine. An ambiguity that is often used by Sufi poets allegorically. The point is it does not matter if there is a material reality but that it celebrates the longing of the lover and his beloved.

Look for hidden meanings in their message, excuse my punjabi but I think 'Ranjha akho mainu heer na akho koi' means that call me by my lovers name, since the immersion of his love has made him and I one. With God this is called divine unity.

If a roofless shrine howcome the interior stays in this shape por this is only a photo .

most shrines got green chaader and why purple on here anything special related with purple colour.

I think its her Karamat...isnt it? :) Its just a photo but shrins is roofless, i have visited this place more than any other shrine in all my life.

Red, pink, purple, orange or green, it keeps changing.

Yes, poetic narrations were also written by other poets like Damodar Das Arora (a local resident of jhang) and Ahmed Gujjar but no one knows them.

Heer Waris Shah is no doubt a masterpiece of Punjabi literature but its just a poetic narrations, through this Hazrat Waris Shah tried to portray the love of man for God but Heer is not just an imaginative character, her story is completely different than the movies.


"Waris Shah; Naa adataan jaandiyan ne, Bhavein katiye poriyan poriyan ji"
(Waris Shah says: A man never abandons his habits, even if he is hacked to pieces)

By the way, recitation of Heer Waris Shah is an art and Folk singers recite it during get-togethers at almost every village and town of Punjab.
