Why do we celebrate Urs?Why do we place flowers on the grave?Why do we make dua at the graveside?

Urs, flowers, dua are understandable ... but why do people cover graves with sheets of clothes ? I believe the term is chaddar ...

The cloth is so that the grave is marked and respected.

I thought the writing on tomb stone was for that purpose. But in any case, is this a cultural practice ?

Tombstone is "a" method. Not the only method. Since tombstones are used by the general folk, it has become a custom to use a such cloth to distinguish the grave and give sufficient respect. It is practiced in every part of Muslim world and not a isolated cultural thing. Imam Sumhudi through a report from Ibn Rushd, connects this custom to Imam Malik.
