Urs, flowers, dua are understandable ... but why do people cover graves with sheets of clothes ? I believe the term is chaddar ... :blink:

If flowers are understanable , what's wrong with Chader ?

The cloth is so that the grave is marked and respected.

I thought the writing on tomb stone was for that purpose. But in any case, is this a cultural practice ?

Tombstone is "a" method. Not the only method. Since tombstones are used by the general folk, it has become a custom to use a such cloth to distinguish the grave and give sufficient respect. It is practiced in every part of Muslim world and not a isolated cultural thing. Imam Sumhudi through a report from Ibn Rushd, connects this custom to Imam Malik.
