Salam.

Can someone tell me if it's alright to name a child Zarar? We like this name but came across the fact that there was a mosque called Zarar mosque where 'munafiqeen' used to plan against muslims and this mosque was burnt by the order of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.

But then there was Zarar or Dharar (in arabic) Ibn Al Azwar, a brave Sahabi in the team of Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed.

So I was thinking if this name was not allowed Nabi Kareem s.a.w would have changed it, but he didn't. We are a bit confused, please advise.

Salaam,

I enquired about its usage from Muffakire Islam back in 2003 and was told to refrain from using this name. When I mentioned the Sahabi (r.a), Muffakire Islam said he doesnt want to get into long details, but to cut a long story, not to use the name. I think it may have something to do with the fact that name of the hypocrites masjid is more well known than that of the Sahabi (r.a). The literal meaning of the name I think means "the one who causes losses."
