The Football Thread

Things have become too heated on here. Im sure there are a few people on here who are interested in football.
As we all know the season has finished and all the pre-season transfer speculation has begun.
The joke of last season was £35million for Andy Carrol where if Liverpool had wanted him at the start of the season it wouldve cost them £2million. I also believe Liverpool will never win the Premiership and will always talk about their 18 league titles when topflight football was called Division One.
Arsene Wenger has destroyed Arsenal. To be called the junior Barcelona is in a way an insult. A club should want its own image not live in the shadows of another!. He needs to spend more than a few hundred pound in bringing a youngster, making him into a star and selling him on for profit. His policies are destroying Arsenals quest for silverware.
This is the latest gossip on BBC Sport

Only time will tell regarding carrol - it may prove to be a bargain or one of the biggest blunders. As a liverpool supporter he isnt the typical liverpool centre forward, and will find it difficult to play the way kenny wants - i.e. pass and move. But if anyone can integrate him it is king kenny!
your thinking is correct when all else fails talk football! I recall that even the germans and brits had time out for a football match during world war 1! General Zia organised a cricket match between india and Pak when tensions heated up! Amazing thing sport.

Could we keep Islam out of this thread please, its just going to start another flame up. Thank you!
But yeah Zola and Hughes would make a class management team at Chelsea. Both are blue out and out. PLus with Ray Wilkins back in the set up.
Guus Hiddink can find another loser country willing to pay him top dollar just to get them into continental competitions.
I reckon David Moyes or a passionate young British manager should replace Fergie, Mourinho wouldnt fit into Man United's ethos.

In my view dalglish is the best manager - and fergie would not have had the titles he has if dalglish had remained at the helm of liverpool.
Suarez is class - the sale of torres looks good business and i dont see him there fore long. Drogba is good and i dont think chelsea will want to pee him off just to incorporate torres. You never know this time next yr dalglish might get him back for 10 million! Anelka is also a good striker just moody!

I dont know which issue is more polarising (heated), the Munazra topic or the Liverpool/Man Utd rivalry.
Anyway, About Andy Carrol. Liverpool did overpay for him. However, dont forget Spurs had already enquired (or intended to) about him for 25 million I think (I cant remember exactly). Come the summer and it was possible that Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and possibly others would have gone for Carrol. The bidding war would resulted in a price of maybe between 25-30 million. It is said that Liverpool over paid by about 15 million.
Quote
I think it was 1 million. Anyway you could say that about many players.
Also it is said that when Chelsea wanted Torres, Liverpool demanded the cost of a replacement plus 15 million. Newscastle werent gonna sell unless it was a huge fee. Chelsea were mugged and liverpool used the money to buy Carrol with 15 million leftover.
Im excited about Carrol. If it works out we have Englands cntre forward for the next 10 years. He is a potential beast of a player.
Im tempted to think it would have been better to keep the Torres 50 million and wait for the Summer when there wouldnt be a rush to buy and no danger of panic buying. In January Liverpool had to pay big because of the deadline. However, I read that if Liverpool didnt spend that 50 million a huge percentage of it would have gone to the Tax man in April.

About the Torres money 50 million. I went to find the info. I came across this post on a forum:
Also, due to us largely being debt free now the Torres money would be noted on our books as profit and subject to corporation tax, wiping out almost half of it's value at the end of the current financial year in April.
I dont know how true this danger was. Some say Club accountants have ways of getting around this.

Btw did you see the penalty kick video that Newsnight finished on the other night? It was shown in slowmotion with the Lenny Kravitz song 'It aint over till its over' playing over it. It was a playoff between 2 Italian lower league teams to decide who is promoted. The game has reached the penalty shootout and the score is 4-4 on penalties.
The penalty taker hits the crossbar. The goalkeeper runs in celebration towards the dugout near the halfway line. I didnt know what the big deal was as I didnt properly listen to the Newsnight presenter. Anyway, as the goalie ran and closer and closer towards the camera, in the background the bouncing ball came into shot.....
Here is a video from youtube: Couldnt find the Newsnight zoomed in version.
Youtube description:
4th penalty of the p.k shootout between Termeno and Dro. Whichever team wins the game moves officially to Eccellenza, the 6th category of Italian football. Palma (the Termeno player) looks desperate after 'missing' while the Dro gk, Angeli is already in party mode. Ball goes in, p.k converted successfully according to ref, next penalty up, Dro player misses, Termeno is now promoted.
PS: Just come across Daily Mail piece saying the authorities called for a replay of the game.

Capello should get sacked from the England job, Harry Redknapp as the next man in.

I think Ian Rush should come out of retirement for Liverpool, maybe he will win them the league at the old age of 50.
Man United are looking to give the Singhs that sit behind Fergie every game, a trial. I heard one of them is better than Messi and the other one due to his size is better than Peter Schmeichal was between the sticks.

Well jury is out on Carrol but Saurez does look a good player.Well Torres has proved before that he's a world class striker so I won't predict him being flop. Its too early, but he's too expensive though.
There's no match for Drogba in the prem, he's on his own at the momoent.
As far as aresenal are concerned, well how long the gooners goona wait for the trophy. the wait goes onnnnnnn. The change on manager may be?

I dont think they need to change manager. I think Wenger is more than capable of tactically mastering championship glory. But the thing is his mentality and his approach has to change. Arsenal need to learn how to win ugly, you can't win beautiful game in game out. He needs to bring 4/5 established names. To survive in the premiership you need to spend 15mill max. To go for silverware, with the amount of money Chelsea and Man City have at their disposal you have to spend big!.
Wenger is currently just moulding future stars and selling them for a profit. Bringing in a cheap next to nothing youngster and selling him on for a huge profit. That has damaged Arsenal because theyve become a footballing Academy.
If Drogba and Anelka leave Chelsea, that exposes serious weaknesses upfront. Even though I believe Kalou is underated. I think if we played down the middle more he would be a world class prospect.

Yes you can burn your shirt but what has essien done in the last two years. After his knee iniury, he hasn't been able to re-discover his form. he was known for his pace and power but sadly he has lost both.

I hope Chelsea sell Terry and Lampard to. I hate Lampard with a passion, hes an overated pile of junk. We need players with flair again like Robben. Malouda has turned into a fine player for us.
I dont want Sneijder, how much do you think Iniesta would cost?
