Why women cry???
A little boy asked his mother, "Why are you crying?"
"Because I need to" she said.
"I don't understand," he said.
His Mom just hugged him and said, "And you never will."
Later the little boy asked his father, "Why does mother seem
to cry for no reason?"
"All women cry for no reason," his dad answered carelessly
The little boy , still wondering why women cry, finally asked
the old wise shaykh. "He surely knows the answer", he thought.
"Ya Shaykh! Why do women cry so easily?"
He answered: "When Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala made the woman she had to be made so
special. He made her shoulders strong enough to carry the
weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. He gave her an
inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that comes
from her children. He gave her a hardness that allows her to keep
going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through
sickness and fatigue without complaining. He gave her the sensitivity
to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her
child hurts her very badly. He gave her strength to carry her
husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect
his heart. He gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never
hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to
stand beside him unfalteringly.
And lastly, He gave her a tear.
This is hers and only hers exclusively to use whenever she needs it.
She needs no reason, no explanation, its hers."
"You see my son, the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes
she wears, the beauty of her face, or the way she combs her
hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes, because that is
the doorway to her heart - the place where love resides."

I don’t understand this post. The Shaikh’s response seems to be a red herring; he does not actually answer the question (or rather gives the same response as that of the mom and the dad) but goes on an off-tangent discourse on the station of the women and how to appreciate her beauty.
Anyway, I don’t think women cry for no reason most of the women always do it for a reason; sometimes, the reason is very fragile but there is one and neither is crying an exclusive sensation of women.

Someone posted awhile back a poets description of the Islamic woman. I think it might have been by Rumi. Can anyone please post if they have it?

Why only women? Men cry too.
Everybody cries in a lifetime but the reason for it can be different. Usually people relate crying with weakness, as they say "be brave, don't cry, or men-don't-cry" but i think crying does not mean lack of courage, a victorious warrior returning from battlefield may cry as well. Tears are for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.
I don't know if it's scientifically proven or not but crying makes you feel better. Especially when you are in the extreme grip of sadness, anger or sometimes happiness too. For example, William Shakespeare, wrote, "To weep is to make less the dept of grief." and a modern Urdu poet Ahmad Faraz sums up the feeling very well
Zabt lazim hay magar dukh hay qayamat ka Faraz
Zaalim ub kay bhi na royee gaa to mar jayeee ga

A beautiful poem, thanks Br DS.
Crying is very natural and thank God for tears otherwise how could we vent our feelings?
I think it's ok for both men and women to cry, usually its culture imposed on men not to show emotions.

Bro DS; i'm nearly there with the poem you posted, can you please translate it into English.
This is a serious question; if I cried, would I be less of a man?

I would be concerned about the state of a believer who didn't cry. If one doesn't understand the might and majesty of Allah, the seriousness of our sins, the plight of humanity and the ummah, the narrations of our Holy Prophet (pbuh) and his companions/family, and the beauty of the Qur'an and cannot cry... then they should cry that they haven't understood this! Seriously.
Muhammad is a man, unlike humankind,
Nay, truly! He is like a ruby amongst stones...

Faraz, it is important to control your emotions but his agony has become unbearable. He must weep or he will die (he should stop trying to control his tears).
No, crying wouldn't make you less of a man. Emotions and feelings are very normal. We should control being overwhelmed but not try to be cold and emotionless. We must show the emotions when needed (and cry when we want to cry) as Ahmad Faraz says "mein jo sahra nazar aata tha samundar nikla" (I appeared to be a desert, but turned out to be the sea).
