The Hadra -the spiritual sufi dance
The Hadra meaning (presence) is a group dhikr- remembrance of the divine (Allah-The God) it is a sufi ceremony that marks the climax of the gathering. It has a dance structure based on deep breathing-(meditation) from the chest accompanied by spiritual poetic chanting, centering on praise and supplication to God, religious exhortations, praise of the Prophet (peace be upon him ), also drums are also used sometimes.
The Hadra is the rhythmic repetition invocations of Allah, using one or more of His Names (especially Allah-The God, Hayy-everlasting/living, "Hu-He", the Name "Allah" is pronounced by stretching out the long vowel in the middle of the name) or the testimony of faith: "la ilaha illa Allah" (there is nothing worthy of worship but God). The Hadra is done to relax the self and energising the heart.
The Hadra which looks like a spiritual dance, is an assembly of only men, (women participants are screened from view) that form circles standing and holding hands (and sometimes not), slightly bowing in unison, moving up and down with their knees in unison, the rows rising and falling, breathing in unison.
The tempo and energy of the hadra changes by singers of poetry near the shaykh. The hadrah is directed by shaykh of the tariqa-path or one of his representatives, the aim is to draw the circle into deep awareness of God.
