I find it very strange that the Ulema in the Uk have not issued halaal certs on food products. This is a matter that needs to be looked into. Here in south africa all food products has stamps on it.

Please note: Before providing here my answer. I would like to say that i am not 100% research sure on my answer.
When i learnt Catering technology.. There i was taught that the Tomoto ketchup (most sauses) have the ingredient of powdered pig bones (Allah please pardon me,If i'm wrong). He also added that this pig bones are added to give some kind of taste & he also said that it will not be mentioned in the ingredient of the sauce.
Which means haram to us.
He also said the Ajnomotto(taste maker) also contains powdered pig bones as one of the ingredient.
Actually,That time i was not in a situation to ask my Catering faculty the Further details about this sauce.Because since he was a christian and he was not intrested to give me Good deep details on this particular topic.

Heinz Ketchup has never contained any animal products.
In addition, the FDA has set a standard of identity for ketchup that does not permit the use of any animal products. Any deviation from this standard of identity would mean that the product could no longer be called ketchup nor sold legally under the name ketchup.

Assalaam Alaikum
We should still be careful when buying kosher products too, as there are such things as kosher wines which could have been mixed in some kosher products too.
Lets stick to Halaal certified products instead.

Heinz Ketchup has spirit vinegar, which I feel is a dodgy ingredient. I hence avoid anything that has spirit vinegar in it .
My problem with spirit vinegar is that if the distillation process to convert the spirit into vinegar is not done properly, some of the spirit remains. This spirit is basically alcohol and hence I prefer to avoid it.

What if they do not have Halal Certificates but the ingredients are halal, because not every product has a halal certificate.
Then consume it if ingrediants are natural, but if artificial then there is a chance there could be forbidden ingrediants that are used in the manufacturing process and which are so minute that by law dont have to be declared on the ingrediants list!
Halaal meaning cleared as halaal by halaal consumer groups, as there are many of them around now.

As regards to things like Vinegar, we can look at the Hadith:
"Sahih Muslim Book 023, Number 5093: Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) asked his family for condiment. They (the members of his household) said: We have nothing with us but vinegar. He asked for it, he began to eat it, and then said: Vinegar is a good condiment, vinegar is a good condiment."
We can't use vinegar as a source for wine, of course wine being forbidden, but vinegar in general is not Haram. The Prophet (saw) did not forbid vinegar or try to look at the origins to determine if its haram, and even at his time they knew there was alcohol involved (See Muslim 23.4891). Think of things like even fruits, alcohol exists in them, but it doesn't mean its Haram. Allah knows best.
