THE POWER OF ISLAM WHEN VISITING AN IDOL CENTER OF BUDDHISM IN SINGAPORE
(The entire sohbet can be watched here: http://saltanat.org/...page.php?id=783 )
Sohbet on January 9th, 2011 – given in Turkish
Transcription –taken from Saltanat.tv- starts from minute 14 approx.:
[Maulana Shaykh Nazim was previously talking to the group of Turkish young people who went to visit him, regarding how much in Turkey traditions have been lost and chaos is seen in the country. Near the start of this transcription, he was mentioning that contrary to what happens in airports to go to Turkey, where there is a mess of administrative procedures making things difficult, in his visit to Singapore landing and entering into the country was very easy, as it should be]

What did we say now, when talking about Singapore … In Singapore, these people … There are Muslims among them, there are Christians and Buddhist who worship Buddha. Hasha, Astaghfirullah. They worship him, it is their belief.
The person who was accompanying us, you say guide, who show us around. That guide person said, “Shaykh Effendi, here … Buddhists are crazy about Buddha’s statue. But it is not an interest like we have. They are committed to that person with strong belief”. [Do] you understand? Meaning: they worship him.
They worship Buddha but they are not under any official pressure, from government or anything.
[Maulana is talking to Turkish people that since young age have been surrounded by statues of Kemal Ataturk the secularist anti-muslim leader that took power in Turkey and rebelled against Sharia laws]
No one forces them to go there. Who likes to go, go and who doesn’t want doesn’t go.
The one who was guiding us said: “Here they have their temple that has the largest Buddha statue in the world. I may take you there if you like and you see it”. I said: “No problem, we go and we have a look”.
And so our guide took us and we went. It is an astonishing structure. Meaning, like the Chinese structure. A strange structure. We went inside.
There is a building, a huge wall. Imagine it, like a theater hall. It is such a big hall. When we went in, I looked may be 40 meters above us there is a huge Buddha, his legs like this (cross-ledged) [Maulana also closes his eyes to show how was the statue and then starts with some humor].
He newer opens his eyes anyway. Never opens, whichever statue of his you look at, in all of them he sits like this and his eyes closed [Maulana mimics as if he is sleeping]. Never looks at you, that one they worship.
The servant of the temple immediately ran and to us. She said: “Welcome sir”. I said: “We came well, thank you”. She said: “It is a custom here to light incence and candles. If you will do these, I may present you [give you] some”. I said: “We don’t believe in this that you worship, that we light candles or incence. We only came here for a visit, our guide offered to show us this one called Buddha, which is the reason for your temple”.
She got a bit upset but I then continued:
“How do you see this person?” According to our belief, this person is our God who we worship. I said: “Hasha, thumma kalla”.
[I] stamped my foot on the ground.
“If this is who you worship, does this person see that youre coming or us coming here” “No, he doesn’t”.
“If we talk, does he hear?”
“No”
“If we spit on him does he raise his hand?”
“No, he doesn’t”
“If we break one part of him, does he say ‘Oh I got broken’?”
[Maulana again]
“How many years that it is here?”
“It is more than 2,000 years”
“For 2,000 years, this one that you worship still does not open his eyes? He always sit like this [Maulana closes his eyes]. Does he not get tired inside this thing? Ah?”
She said: “It is our belief”
I said: “Does he never lay down? He sits like this, doesn’t get tired?”
She said to me:
“You are the shaykh of muslims [meaning: I see you are a shaykh of muslims] I will show you that this, that we worship, sleeps too”.
She took me to the back. I saw that there is another one [statue] laying down.
She said: Here he sleeps and here he sits”.
I asked: “How many Buddhas are there?”
She said: “Countless Buddhas. There are countless Buddhas here”
“All like this”
“All we show respect like this. It is our religion. And this belief of our shows us the Glorious Way. Our spirituality grows stronger”.
“What spirituality do you have?” I asked.
“If you have spirituality from Buddha, show me”
Shaykh Nazim continues:
“Look, I will show you my hand. Pay attention”.
And at that time, the power got dressed on me.
I said:
[Pointing his finger to one side and then another, dragging it]
“Come this way and that way!” It came this way and that way!
“Bow you head!” It bowed his head.
We saw that the lady servant fell down. I said: “Let’s go before we got into trouble, they will say: ‘This one destroyed Buddha’”.
For the ones who worship the new statue, if that one gives one sign, which he already did, not one can remain up in their places till morning.
It’s time will come, it’s time will come … May Allah forgive us.
It is the respect of these people for their own religion. The country which has the most statues in the world is first Singapore. Second, is Turkish Republic.
We [the Turkish, are] also filled with statues. It is filled!
It is said when something becomes plenty, its value becomes down. It becomes cheap. It became very cheap. Before we, when archbishop passed away … Are you sleeping, oh Shakir?
Guest: No Maulana, we are in a state of ecstasy.
[Maulana smiles, and continues]:
Who brings these young men here, I say [speak] in Turkish that they may understand. If it is a lie, they can go and ask that one [the lady in Singapore].
Guest: Hasha.
Maulana: What we were saying?
Guest: You said archbishop.
Maulana: When archbishop passes away, they make him sit in his throne, chair. Ypu understand? They dress him, put his crown on his head. They dress him with his clothes, etc. and take him to a place. He stands there, all who pass by. One person holds his hand like this. [In a position that others may kiss the hand]
[Looking to a guest]
This one is from Cyprus? He knows such things. What was his name?
Guest: Hussein.
Maulana: Long live Hussein, you are a clever one.
One person holds the archbishop behind, holding his hand so that people kiss his hand. And another person holds his head, that it does not drop!
They would take him like this to the cementery, with a parade.
And they wouldn’t make him lay in the cementery either. They would lower him to the grave in his chair sitting like this, and then cover with soil.
Now ours as well, in a new fashion way, after the Buddhist countries, second country with most statues has become Turkey. They may count (the statues) if they like. But they wouldn’t be able to count (so many).
We may illustrate the statue with the example of plastic fruits. You may offer plastic fruits to your guest: “Here you go”. He picks a banana and looks, it is plastic. Puts it back. Takes a grape and looks, it is plastic too. Takes and apple, it is as well plastic. Orange …
He says: “It is not possible to eat this. Why did you put this for us?”
“We are treating you”
“From nylon?” Is it nylon [the word]? Plastic. Can someone get full with plastic?
Bring something else, at least you could bring yellow roasted chickpeas with dried grapes (famous Turkish snack mix).
That would be something if we put it in our mouth.
But you put in front of us plastic things for 90 years; from bronze, from marble, from iron … and you say: ‘Believe in this, keep his word, don’t you depart from its rule’.
We didn’t depart till now but now we did! Before they didn’t depart but the new generation says: “what is this giving us, what can it give us? If it gives us something, we may walk in his way, but if it can’t give nothing, we are starving”.
Meaning, our hunger is a spiritual hunger, not physical. We have so much to eat for physical hunger, but this can’t satisfy our spirituality.
Since it can’t satisfy, then don’t put this in front of us each time!
Now the youth got hungry, they say: “What is it giving us?” If it is guiding you, then why don’t you follow his way but instead you fight? Why are you fighting each other?
That one you put up his statues [meaning: Kemal Ataturk], he didn’t show you a way? If he did, why don’t you follow it? Now you become 70 different parties. You speak ill of each other. You fight, debate each other, what is this? Why don’t you follow his way?
When I say this, they say: ‘You don’t know’.
No, I know what you father and also your grandfather did not know. There is nothing you know. If there is a man who can come out and say this that we speak of, he may say it.
Guest: There is not such one not even in whole world other than you.
Maulana: May Allah forgive us. May Allah forgive us.
Ok, this is enough for you now.
…
Allah bless you. What can we do? Should we hide the Truth? Who doesn’t speak the Truth is a silent shaytan.
Why should we not say? Why are you deceiving people?
“Who deceives us is not one of us” said the Sultan of the Prophets (saaws)
[Maulana Shaykh Nazim stands up in his –saaws- honour and then sits]
Why are you deceiving the people?
Here, whole world of Islam is falling over and collapsing because they deceived. Who forgets Allah, who doesn’t know the Prophet (saaws) has so much to come on them.
Ya Rabbi, tawba Ya Rabbi. Tawba astaghfirullah.
May You send us from your servants who will show us the ways to guidance.
May those who lead us to the opposite ways disappear suddenly!
Oh Our Lord, You know.
You know. We are your weak servants. Ya Rabbi.
For the honour of his beloved (saaws). He is the one that salatu salam from pre-eternal up to eternal is for him.
[Maulana stands up in his honor again]
Habibullah! Rasulullah! Sayyid al Awwalin wal Akhiriin.
[Then sits]
We send salatu salam on him and read Fatiha
