Yes, as far as i know, its preferred but not necessary.

Imagine a person who stays up all night........would it mean that he/she can't offer the Tahajjud? Off course not. One should try to sleep, but if they can't/haven't its still OK for them to pray Tahajjud.

The prayer itself can be as short as two Rakaa' and can be extended to as many as u wish. Aqa Ji (SalAllaho Alahi WaAlehi Wasalam) is reported to have prayed EIGHT (8) Rakaa's on a regular basis.

May Allah give us all the will and determination to pray our Fardh prayers and supplement them with Nawaafil.

Are you sure?

As far I am aware:

" to sleep lying down or by resting the body against something"

breaks your wudu. It is not just deep sleep.

As Far as my knowledge says and even what i heard from others

Sleeping is Compulsory and ppl do have this misunderstanding that Tahajjud can be offered only in the midnight

No its wrong, the rule says that if you have completed your Prayer (Salat or Namaz) of Isha and after that if you sleep for 1 minute only you can pray Tahajjud.

i have heard the same as the post directly above me. Sleep is the condition even for one minute.. if like in summer when the time between Isha and Fajr is less and you tend to wake at night then you can do nafals same as tahajud and do the niyyat. Surely Allah will not reject your Ibadah..
